Fill out another 1040 form with a new W2
Assume that you're single/no kids, no one can claim you as a dependent and you have $20 in taxable income from a savings account.
INSTRUCTIONS:
On the line that says wages, you enter in box 1 of the W2 form. That's how much you earned from your job. If applicable, you add taxable interest under line 2 (in this HW, I said, yes, pretend you got $50 of taxable interest from your savings account).
Then most of the other stuff you leave blank, because it doesn't apply to an average person.
Line 6, you add up Line 1-Line 5 (so in this case just line 1 + line 2).
Line 7, you have no adjustments (this is advanced-level taxes for when you're older and hire an accountant)
Line 8, follow the instructions in that little side box. It says if you're single, enter a deduction of $12,000. (In this example, I said pretend you're single and no one can claim you as a dependent).
Line 9 blank (that's income if you have a side-business, which if you ever do, probably hire an accountant)
Line 10 it says subtract line 8 from line 7. This is the taxable income. This is what you need to pay taxes on.
Line 11a says 'Tax' this is where you look up the amount you owe on the tax table in page 67 of the instruction booklet. Going off of the amount on line 10, look up the tax you owe on the table and write it here.
Leave the other stuff blank (it won't apply to you unless you have kids and other stuff, in which case, hire an accountant)
Line 15 just carry over the amount from 11a (this is the actual amount you need to pay)
Line 16 that's the amount of income tax withheld from box 2 of the W2 form (the amount that they estimated you'd need to pay)
So, if you overpaid (if line 16 is bigger) you get a refund. Subtract the numbers and put it on line 19
If you underpaid (if line 15 is bigger) you need to pay them the difference. subtract the numbers and put it on line 22.
