The IB Visual Arts course emphasizes both students' creative process and their final artistic product in 2-D or 3-D arts forms. Students will produce investigation workbooks (Journals) to support, inform, develop and refine studio work through sustained contextual, visual and critical investigation. A multicultural understanding of the moral, social, and economic values of art will be developed. IB Visual Arts students will actively pursue the questions “What is art?”, “Why do people create art?”, and” What makes art valuable?” This will enable the student to develop critical thinking and to form their own perceptions. Last but not least, students will learn how to connect their research to their own work, creating art that expresses personal meaning within a cultural, historical and discipline-based context. Throughout the course, students will be expected to be self-driven and are given the opportunity to determine their individual course of study. This includes content, media, and subject matter. The nature of the course changes over the two year period. It begins primarily teacher-directed, with students following assignments and instructions which are designed to get them working in their Investigation Workbooks (Journals) and developing ideas for the course of inquiry they will follow in their studio work. This course will culminate in an individual exhibition of studio work at the end of the second year. A specific and clearly defined criterion is set for both the studio component of the course as well as the Investigation Workbook (Journal).

- Looking on Internet please investigate and reflect in your journal on the story of Christmas. You have to find at least two artists who had painted the same event (the birth of Jesus). On this video you will find paintings from the famous Renaissance painter - Pieter Brueghel. He could be one of the artists. - Then compare and contrast Breughel’s work with artist who worked on the same theme but from different period of time. Reflect in your journal similarities/ differences between the artists. (Learn about these artists and reflect in your art journal about him/her, and the period of time their art was painted. Reflect also on the paintings. (name, techniques, etc.). Use your VA Handbook. Also you could add small photos of their works in your journals.
- Finally, if you would like to say the story of Christmas, how you will do it through art, how you will communicate it? Your goal is to create an artwork on the same theme and yes, you are free to choose your medium, could be anything from the 3 columns (see your VA Handbook). Do not forget that you have to develop your idea using your Visual art journal- at least 5 pages. Before you start your artwork don't forget to sketch your ideas. You have to have at least 3 sketches before you start on canvas.

From what I am observing so far your themes are pretty broad and not focused. It is time to focus on your theme! To do that you have to use the following directions:
- Please explain your theme, the ideas behind it, and how you came about it.
- What were your influences in choosing this theme?
- How does this theme relate to your personality? (This is very important!!!)
The questions that you have to ask yourself are:
- Why these ideas? What do they have to do with me?
- What interests me about them?
Your development of ideas will be easier and flow if you know how they relate to you and the answer to “why”?
