SGMHS Junior Publishes Poem

San Gabriel Mission High School Junior, Sidny Ramirez, recently had her poem “Green Star” published in the current WriteGirl Anthology. WriteGirl is a “Los Angeles-based creative writing and mentoring organization that spotlights the power of a girl and her pen.” WriteGirl began in December 2001 to “bring the skills and energy of professional women writers to teenage girls who do not otherwise have access to creative writing or mentoring programs. “ They have over 200 volunteer women writers serving more than 500 girls annually. The workshops discuss poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, songwriting, journalism, screenwriting, playwriting, journal writing, editing and much more. Writegirl anthologies have a total of “81 book awards.”

According to Sidny, she attended WriteGirl Workshops and felt the workshops had a calm and fun environment for girls from 14 to 19 years old. At the workshops, attendees got paired with mentors who helped them write poems and even songs. One of Sidny’s favorite workshop was the Songwriting Workshop she attended last February. She got the opportunity to write songs and get help from Louise Goffin and MILCK. Near the end, the songwriters would sing the songs the girls created. Sidny said it was “an awesome experience.”

Sidny has been a writing intern at SGMHS since her freshman year. Currently she writes for the “Young Writer’s Corner” at San Gabriel Valley Now, an online newspaper. She will be attending the new season of WriteGirl on November 2 at the Huntington in Pasadena.
