Research Assignment

• Each senior is required to write a research paper (2,000 – 3,000 words) on a topic of their choosing. This process begins at the freshmen level as students learn the intricacies of writing. Each year, writing and research knowledge is built upon so students have the skills and confidence necessary to write this paper. Junior year, students not only choose their topic and begin their research, but also develop their thesis and write an annotated bibliography so they stay on track with their paper.

• Students will also be assigned an advisor from the faculty to assist with the content of the research paper. Each student must meet with their advisor a minimum of three times - before turning in the second, third, and final drafts of their paper. These meetings will be built into the grade of the paper.

• The summer before senior year, students will write their first draft to be turned in during the first week of school. Two more drafts will be written and turned in at the end of the first quarter and at the end of the second quarter/first semester with the final draft due at the end of the third quarter.

• Students will formally present their research to a panel comprised of their senior English teacher, their faculty advisor, and a member of San Gabriel community. Student surveys will also be used in the final evaluation of the presentation.

All of the above will become 20% of the student's overall grade per semester.
