SGMHS Pays Homage to Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego
On December 6, 2018 San Gabriel Mission High School was honored to be chosen as one of the places included in the 2018 Pilgrimage schedule where the Virgin of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego images would be on display. The entire student body and guests attended mass as the mariachi band from Salesian High School offered their gifts leading the congregation in song. Vigils were held until 10:00 p.m.
The 87th Annual Procession and Mass in honor of our Lady of Guadalupe were held in East Los Angeles on December 9th. History tells us that this procession was started by Mexican Catholics in Los Angeles who fled Mexico due to government persecution in 2931. “Those who were persecuted by the Mexican government and gave up their lives for their faith in Christ became known as ‘Cristeros.’ On May 21, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized a group of 25 saints and martyrs from the Mexican Cristero War.”
Since 1931, the Catholic faithful of Los Angeles have continued the tradition and honor Our Lady of Guadalupe through this procession, which is held every year on the First Sunday of Advent. It is an “archdiocese-wide celebration.” This allows each church to have “their own Mass and Mananitas for La Guadalupana on her December12th feast day.”
