SGMHS Junior Attends U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer STEM Program

Over the past summer, San Gabriel Mission High School junior, Rebekah Lopez, attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland as part of their summer STEM Program. Rebekah applied for STEM Session 3 which was for all high school juniors. She applied in early January, 2017 and received an email in April, 2017 explaining her acceptance into the program as well as receiving a full scholarship. More than 6,000 students applied worldwide, but only 300 were accepted into STEM Session 3.

Rebekah was in 1st Platoon, 1st Company. During her labs, she leaned many things, including how a helicopter’s propellers work, she soldered her own small robot, used coding the same way the Navy does, and programmed an EV3 Mindstorm Robot with a partner.

According to Rebekah, the U.S. Naval Academy has always been her “dream school.” So attending this program was very special to her.  “I had an amazing time learning more information about the academy as well as getting to meet so many people from all over the world. I will never forget this awesome experience.”
